Disaster Management Program

Nepal is prone to various types of disasters like Earthquakes, landslides, floods, fires, avalanches, wind, draught, lightning, hailstone, showers, industrial disasters, epidemics, and many more. Nepal stands in 11th and 30th position, for the risky country in the world for earthquake and flood respectively as per the survey conducted.
With regard to the loss of lives, earthquakes of high intensity and bigger scale flood and landslides are major disasters. Floods and landslides act as regular phenomenon in the monsoon period in Nepal. The people in both hills and terai are affected by floods and landslides each year. A study has shown that 32,000 families fall victims to the landslides and floods in Nepal every year and millions of rupees worth of public and private property/infrastructure is being washed out annually.
Forest fire in terai during dry season and epidemic in Nepal all year round is another major disaster.
Every year, people residing in disaster prone areas are getting poorer day by day and local infra structures are being destroyed due to disaster. Poor and disadvantaged people are compelled to live in such areas.
Due to this major problem, FSCN is working in the disaster management sector to reduce the effects of disaster focusing on preparedness, mitigation and relief support to the disaster victims. Every year FSCN is providing relief support to disaster victims with the support of local, national and international organizations.
We have integrated disaster management with poverty, Human rights, Gender, Water, Health and Sanitation and implementing with the same approach. We are taking disaster as a cross cutting issues in every development activities and raising awareness and advocating to all the concerned organizations.FSCN has been running various program and activities on disaster management mainly on awareness raising, advocacy lobbying, capacity building, livelihood and relief support to the disaster victims.

Major Activities in Disaster Management

Network Activities in Disaster Management

We have formed the Central level Disaster Management network Nepal (DiMaNN) out of the experience, learnings and achievement in the disaster management sector. This network has extended upto district level. It’s a common network of the NGOs of Nepal working for disaster management. The network is led by FSCN. It is the national level network that does not implement the program itself but supports the NGOs working on disaster management. FSCN also facilitated to form the Disaster Victim Concern Network Nepal (DiViCoNN) to raise the voice by the disaster victims themselves.
