Interaction on Role of Women in DRR on the occasion of IDRR Day 2017

One day interaction program was jointly organized by Mahalaxmi Women Group, Lalitpur and FSCN under  “Strengthening Information Management System and DRR Coordination Mechanism in Kathmandu Valley” project on Role of women on Disaster Risk Reduction on 16 November on the occasion of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction at Lubhoo.  The interaction program was divided into two sessions. First session of the program was conducted in the chairmanship of Mr. Surya Bahadur Thapa; Executive Chairperson of FSCN, Mayor of Mahalaxmi Municipality Mr. Rameshwor Shrestha as a chief guest, Assistant Mayor, Executive Officer of Municipality, ward chair of Mahalaxmi Municipality ward no: 9, DCA representative as guests. They all keep their opinion on the role of women in DRR.

In the second session,  Advocate Mr. Bishnu Prasad Timilsina-General Secretary of DiMANN facilitated on the legal aspects of women role in Disaster Risk Reduction in international and national context with reference to newly endorsed Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act 2017, and a short presentation was also done by Mr. Surya Bahadur Thapa on terminologies of DRR along with the interaction in which suggestions and way forwards were collected on role of women  in disaster preparedness and risk reduction. Participants of the program were more interested on women’s participation in development planning, capacity enhancement in DRR, lack of property rights  to women etc.

The joint effort of this interaction was  aimed at raising the awareness to the women on disaster preparedness and risk reduction thereby minimizing the challenges through capacity enhancement, better coordination and collaboration. All together 66 participants were present in the program 8 male and 58 female.
