Mrs. Phool Maya Tamang a permanent residence of Mahalaxmi-10, Lakuribhanjyang is 37 years old single women lives together with three Sons and one daughter in law . Her husband died before 5 years due to Jaundice (water Borne Disease). Mrs. Phool Maya works as a labor on daily basis. Besides this, she has two cows for extra money from selling milks. Earthquake on 25th April, 2015, her house was destroyed by the earthquake and then after she is living in a temporary house. The land she is living now is also not on her name due to which she is complied to use neighbor’s latrine. Earthquake also destroyed the water tank and increased the WASH problem, which made her to travel through difficult roads for around 30-45 minutes to fetch water. On total she needed to collect around 50 liters of water for drinking as well as for Cows and total time needed is around 2 hour per day.She said “Due to lack of water I use to bath and wash cloths once in a week only and travelling longer difficult distance to fetch the water was really difficult for my family”.
She also expressed here development on her leadership skills due to our different training, and now she can happily express her feelings. After Completion of water tank, now she just need less than 10 minutes for water collection for drinking and house hold purpose. Due to enough availability of water on her near area, has also solved the sanitation problem during daily life and also during menstrual period. Now she is able to save her time and utilize that on livelihood purpose. In coming days she wants to build a house with proper latrine.Mrs. Tamang actively took part in One day training to female community volunteers on water sanitation and hygiene and its refresher. Mrs Tamang said “This type of training is very important to people like us who were not able to go schools during child age. Mrs. Tamang also took part in Compost making & solid waste management training. She was so excited during the training because now she can make compost from the cow dung and also from the waste material that came out from her home.
Different types of crisis are being normal in this century; the challenge is that the people are not prepared to this. WASH is one of the sectors which are affected seriously due to this type of crisis in the community like Mahalaxmi-10, Lakuribhanjayang. Especially women, weak, disable and sick people are more vulnerable on WASH. Women like Mrs Tamang is real hero for inspiring the whole community and her WASH activities at the community level are very important to bring WASH positive behavioral change.
