People have very low level of awareness in health and sanitation and suffering from various diseases borne from hygiene and sanitation. People are defecating night soil in open field; very few people are using separate toilets. They are using open field for toilet from generation to generation, although they are rich. People are using well, tap, tube well and river for drinking water but without testing the water quality, arsenic. Because of this people are suffering from water borne diseases. First people visit to traditional faith healer for treatment and these practices is continuing from generation to generation. So, people are worsening their health rather than curing it. Because of this, poor people are turning poorer as they have to make unnecessary medical expenses. Poor and illiterate people are more suffering from such problems especially in remote and village areas of Nepal.
Therefore, considering seriousness of water, sanitation and health issues, FSCN has been running water, health and sanitation program in needy areas where people are poor and illiterate. Currently, FSCN has been running People campaign for water, health and sanitation (PCWaSH) project in Rupandehi district with the support of Simavi, The Netherlands. Approximately, 9077 people will be directly benefited where as more than 20000 people will be indirectly benefited. We have successfully completed rural water and sanitation program with the support from Rural Water and Sanitation Fund Development Board (RWSFDB) and Aus Aid support in Lalitpur and Nuwakot district of Nepal.
FSCN is also a member of Resource Center Network Nepal (RCNN). RCNN is network of I/NGOs working in water and sanitation sector. For the continuation and sustainability of the project, FSCN has encouraged community people to establish local maintenance fund and they are saving funds for the maintenance.
